Landmarks
created between 2022 and 2023 again reflects my passion for creating marks that lead to textured and patinated surfaces. The paintings draw directly and indirectly from the natural world around me, from the bush colours and textures. The scribbly gum, with its unique and intriguing appearance has provided a source of inspiration for me. Its smooth bark, with its pale greys, rich rusts and warm browns and creams is adorned with intricate and whimsical scribbles created by burrowing insect larvae that tell stories of nature's creativity and resilience. The scribbly gum is a symbol of nature's artistry, reminding me to find beauty and wonder in the most unexpected places. I do not wish to render these trees, their marks and patterns, with faithful realism, but rather to draw upon their beauty and to capture the essence of their colours and textures as mixed media abstract paintings. The horizon, although distant is always visible to me where we live and makes its presence is felt as a division in many of the works. My process involved a dialogue of addition and subtraction to create works that are one again resolved and yet somehow degraded, abstract and structured, yet organic. Letting go of the directly representational has allowed me to explore qualities within my work and in this series is strongly underpinned by difference and repetition.
