When Evening Falls So Soft

$550.00

Mixed Media on cradled birch panel

Framed in Victorian Ash floating frame to 25 x 25 x 5 cms

At the end of our road, close to the Crown Land bush is a disused quarry. The very bottom is always submerged because it is fed by a spring and when it rains the whole quarry fills with water from the hills behind it and is quite deep. When the weather is dry, more of the gravelly banks are seen. When Evening Falls So Soft was inspired by my evening walks at dusk through the summer. My current work is very much about creating a sense of the rural landscape in which I live. The horizon line and big skies are a presence I hope is inferred in this painting. Cycles of heat, wind, rain, drought, fire, alter the land and its surfaces year in, year out. Through a complex mix of textured mediums and many layers of washed glazes I seek to find the nuance and transience of those surfaces. In a time where we are constantly overloaded with visual images, the minimalist aesthetic of this painting offers a moment of quiet and peaceful contemplation.
